Read : Matthew 26: 26-29
“A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup.” - I Corinthians 11: 28
In the Last Supper that Jesus observed with His disciples, He took two elements from the Passover Feast, the unleavened bread and the cup, and He used these to picture His own death. The broken bread pictured His body given for the sins of the world. The “fruit of the vine” (Matthew 26: 28) pictured His blood, shed for the remission of sins.
Dear friends, the Lord’s Supper gives us an opportunity for spiritual growth and blessings if we approach it in the right attitude. So what must we do to receive blessings?
First, we should look back. (I Corinthians (11: 23-26) Jesus wants us to remember His death. This is an important part of Gospel message. “Christ died ... and was buried.” (I Corinthians 15: 3-4) It is not the life of our Lord, or His teachings that will save sinners, but His death.
Second, we should look ahead. We observe the Lord’s Supper till He comes. Jesus not only died for us, but He rose again and ascended into heaven, and one day will return to take us to heaven.
Third, we should look within. We should participate in the Lord’s Table in a worthy manner. For this we must examine our own hearts, judge our sins and confess them to the Lord. To come to the Table with unconfessed sin in our lives is to be guilty of Christ’s body and blood for it was sin that nailed Him to the Cross.
If we do not confess our sins, then God will chasten us and judge us, and it is not to be taken lightly. So let us draw near the Table with awe and reverence to God and repentance from sin.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, as I participate in Your Table and take the bread and the wine today, let me remember Your death, let me proclaim Your resurrection and let me await Your second coming. Let me take part with reverence and repent from any sin that You convict me of. Amen.
