"Pray continually.”  - I Thessalonians 5: 17

“Of all the spiritual activities people engage, the most universal must be prayer,” writes Mike T. Lacanilao.  Even atheists when in day distress have known to utter fervently,  “Save me!”  and make petitions to any god that will listen to them.  Clearly, all people pray, but as Christians how are we to pray to the living God who not only hears our prayers and answers them as well?  The Bible shows us many people who serve as inspirations for us in prayer.

For example, in Colossians 4:12-13 we read of Epaphras’ prayer life.  Epaphras was the founder of the Church at Colossae.  In prison he prayed for his flock, with humility and  perseverance.  He prayed hard in order to achieve an objective - that the Colossian believers “may stand firm in the will of God, mature and fully assured.” (Colossians 4: 12)   He was a prayer warrior, who prayed diligently with essential zeal.

Hudson Taylor was the founder of Inland China Mission.  Having served for 40 years as a missionary in China, he could say boldly, “The sun has never risen upon China without  finding me in prayer.”  A man of God who brought great revival in his city once said, “I spend hours in prayer everyday, but I live in the spirit of prayer.  I pray as I walk and when I lie down.  I pray when I wake up.  The answers are always coming.”

Dear friends, to be great in prayer requires hard work.  Those who want great success in prayer must take great pains in prayer - long hours, early rising, deep concentration.  God sees and honors the sacrifice we make in secret.  Let us be men and women of prayer and pray Spirit-filled prayers.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, let me not just talk about prayer, but pray earnestly for the needs of those around me.  Let me not treat prayer casually, but understand that it is the most powerful weapon against Satan.  Let me pray unceasingly, for You delight to answer my prayer offered with a right motive.  Amen.
