“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is … to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”  - James 1: 27

When Moses and Aaron asked Pharaoh to allow the Israelites to go from Egypt, he offered four compromises to Moses and Aaron.

First, he told them, “Go, sacrifice to your God here in the land.” (Exodus 8:25) Moses and Aaron rejected this offer because some of the animals the Israelites would offer as sacrifice to the Lord like the cow, the ram and the bull were sacred to the Egyptians.

Secondly, Pharaoh told Moses and Aaron, “I will let you go to offer sacrifices to the Lord your God in the desert, but you must not go very far.” (Exodus 8: 28)  But, again, Moses and Aaron rejected his offer because they wanted to obey God’s command and not Pharaoh’s deceptive words.

On the third occasion, when Pharaoh asked Moses, “Who will be going to worship the Lord?” Moses replied, “We will go with our young and old, with our sons and daughters, and with our flocks and herds.” But, Pharaoh offered to let only the men go. (Exodus 10:11) He thought that if he held their families hostages, they would certainly return to Egypt. But, Moses and Aaron rejected even this compromise.

Fourthly, Pharaoh said that the Israelites could go to worship their God, but they couldn’t take their flocks and herds with them. (Exodus 10: 24) His plan was to confiscate all their livestock. And once again Moses and Aaron rejected the offer because they knew that they had to obey the will of God.

Dear friends, Warren Wiersbe writes, “True service to God means giving Him authority over all our possessions and the members of our family for whom we are responsible. Once we start to negotiate the will of God and see how close we can get to the world, we have already disobeyed Him in our hearts!” So, let us be careful only to obey God’s words, but never fall a prey to the enemy’s cunning tricks.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, how cunningly Pharaoh tried to retain the Israelites in his bondage! But, how strong and determined Moses and Aaron stood before him without yielding even to the slightest degree. Help me also to resist the devil and obey you alone without getting tempted by the world. Amen.
