Read : Deuteronomy 7:3-16
“Therefore, come out from them and be separate,” says the Lord.”
- II Corinthians 6:17
God calls us to live a separated life. In Scripture, separation is not isolation. God commanded Abraham to leave Ur and go to the land that He would show him. On reaching that place, Abraham was allied with some of his neighbors, and together they defeated the invaders and rescued the people of Sodom and Gomorrah. Yet, Abraham never lived as his neighbors did, nor did he worship their gods. Our Lord Jesus, when He lived in this earth, mixed freely with the tax-collectors and the sinners, yet He was undefiled, holy and set apart from sinners. When the Lord gave the Israelites the land of Canaan, He commanded them not to make a treaty with those people or become influenced by their lifestyle. What was the reason? Because God knew that any link with the godless Canaanite religion would lead Israel to go astray and neglect their fellowship with Himself. Israel was God’s chosen people and a treasured possession. So, their separation from idolatry was important to the nation’s spiritual health and political future.
Dear friends, the Lord expects the same kind of separation from us even today. Like Israel, we too are God’s chosen people and His treasured possession, a kingdom of priests and a holy nation (I Peter 2:5, 9), and like Israel we are called to be the light of the world and salt of the earth. (Mathew 5:13-16) So let us obey what the Lord has commanded us. When we do so, the Lord will indeed bless us. May the Lord help us to make a commitment to be separated from sin and be separated to God. PRAYER: Dear Lord, though I live among people of other faiths, let me not be influenced by their lifestyle or their religious practices. Let me not enter into any kind of treaty with them. At the same time, let me not isolate myself from them but create a godly impact in their lives. Amen.
