Psalm 32 and Psalm 51 are the record of David’s confession of his sin, his repentance and his restoration. David had to pay a great price when he tried to cover his sin. Sin had its awful effects on David’s mind and body: These psalms point out the spiritual and emotional consequences for covering sin. In Psalm 32: 3,4 David lamented, “My bones wasted away through my mourning all day long. ... my strength was sapped.” Have you ever watched a child who has done something he shouldn’t do? We may not know what he has done, but we know he is guilty of something. Why? We can see it in his eyes! He is saying to himself, “I wonder whether they know.” Wherever he looks he feels fears whether he will be caught. This is what happened to David. He would look up to the heavens and say, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” (Psalm 19:1) He would watch the flood and he would write, “The Lord sits enthroned over the flood.” (Psalm 29: 10) But all of this stopped. David no longer saw the beauty of God or His creation. What did David see? In Psalm 51:3 he confessed: “My sin is always before me.” But the good news is David did not stay in his sin. He repented and confessed his sins to God. God cleansed him and God restored him.
Dear friends, let us realize the high cost of covering sin. Let us confess our sin. What He did for David, God can do the same for us also. He is merciful and never abandons all who call on His name.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, before David sinned, he was a friend of God, he was enriched in spiritual blessing, but after he sinned, he became defiled and felt forsaken by You. In Your mercy You forgave him when he repented. Forgive me Lord as I confess my sin. Make me clean. Amen.
