Read : Daniel 2 : 29 - 35, 45

“The Lord detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: they will not go unpunished.” - Proverbs 16:5

In the book of Daniel we read of a stunning incident that took place in the life of a king who faced terrible consequences because of his pride. The king was Nebuchadnezzar, and this incident took place during prophet Daniel’s time. In the second year of his reign, the king had a dream of an enormous dazzling statue. When he was watching, a rock struck the statue on its feet and smashed them. Then the whole statue collapsed. But, the rock grew into a huge mountain and filled the whole earth. The king invited wise men in his country to reveal his dream and also to interpret its meaning, which none of them could do. Finally, Daniel by the power of the Lord of heaven revealed the king’s dream. Daniel told the king, “God of heaven has given you dominion and power and might and glory. He had made you ruler over all creatures. In the time of the kings who would follow you, the Lord will establish a kingdom which would not be destroyed but it will crush all the other kingdoms forever.” The king was overwhelmed to hear Daniel’s interpretation of his dream. And according to Daniel’s words, the king enjoyed a time of peace and security. After defeating all his enemies and completing great building projects, he thought that he was the builder of “Babylon the great,” and the architect of peace and prosperity. His heart swelled up with pride because of all his achievements. He failed to understand that it was the Lord of heaven who had given him this honor and power. As a result, he had to face a terrible judgment.

Dear friends, when the Lord chooses to bless us, let not our hearts become proud and arrogant. But let us be careful to give God all the glory. Amen.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, when You bless me let me not become proud and haughty. Let me acknowledge that You are the Sovereign God and You have the power to bless and even punish a person. Let me be humble and give You all the glory. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
