“I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully with my eyes.”
- Job 31:1
Samson judged Israel for twenty years in the days of the Philistines. The Lord had given Samson a godly heritage and he had been raised to honor the Lord, but as he allowed himself to be controlled by the lust of his eyes, ultimately brought dishonor to his parents and to the Lord. How? Firstly, contrary to God’s Law, he decided to marry a Philistine woman when he went to Timnah. The woman first enticed him, then controlled and finally betrayed him. Thus Samson was deceived. Secondly, he went to Gaza. There he saw a prostitute and decided to visit her. (Judges 16:1) Once again the lust of the eyes and the lust of the flesh combined to grip Samson and made him a slave to his passions. The Lord certainly did not approve of such behavior of Samson, a Nazarite. This experience led him to take one more step closer towards darkness and destruction. Thirdly, Samson went to the Valley of Sorek, which was the enemy territory where he once again yielded to the lust of his eyes. He met a woman called Delilah and fell in love with her. She gradually weakened him, impoverished him and finally succeeded in handing him over to the Philistines as a captive.
Dear friends, Samson’s decline began the moment he gave in to his flesh. First, he disagreed with his parents about marrying a Philistine girl. Then he disdained his Nazarite vow and defiled himself by the prostitute of Gaza. And finally, he disobeyed the Word of God and was defeated by the enemies of God. ‘Since Samson did not discipline his eyes, he lost both his witness and his calling. Let us be cautioned by Samson’s life, let us guard our eyes and consecrate them every minute and use them for God’s glory. PRAYER: Almighty God, I live in a world which is controlled wholly by the enemy Satan. Help me not to be deceived by the traps he has laid to entice me. Let me realize that once I yield to his temptation, he will lead me to eternal darkness and destruction. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
