“Do not wear yourself out to get rich; ... Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone.” - Proverbs 23:4,5

It is astonishing to know that many family fights are caused because of the love for money.  A classical example of this is the relationship between Abraham and Lot.  They started together from Ur, but something went wrong on the way. When their flocks and herds began to increase, they had many practical difficulties in living together.  This led to quarreling between both their herdsmen.  So Abraham said  to Lot, “Let’s part company.”  Then came the great test for Lot.  When Abraham asked him to choose the land, his eyes fell on the plain of Jordan, the most fertile land, where Sodom was and took possession of it.  And what was the result?  Sodom was destroyed because of God’s wrath and ultimately Lot had to flee from the city to a mountain along with his wife and two daughters, leaving all his possessions!

Dear friends, Lot first looked towards Sodom (Genesis 13:10).  Then, he moved towards Sodom, (1311,12) and finally he moved into Sodom. (14:12)  The people of Sodom did not appear to be wicked to the eyes of Lot, but they were in fact a perverse generation in the eyes of the Lord because of their sinfulness. The fertile land blinded the eyes of Lot and his covetousness led to his downfall.  Let us be cautioned by Lot’s life.  Lot was a righteous man, (II Peter 2:7-8) but he was not devoted to the Lord.  He was a friend of the world.  Satan uses circumstances, people and things to tempt us in order to distract us from our relationship with God.  But let us not lose our vision.  Let us lift up our eyes to heaven and see what God offers to us.

PRAYER: Almighty God, when Satan showed Jesus all the kingdoms of the world and promised that he would give them to Him, how Jesus stood firm and chased him away from His presence without yielding to his temptation!  Let me be like Jesus and fix my eyes to heavenly treasure and not be like Lot.  Amen.
