“It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”- Hebrews 10:31
The word “hypocrisy” simply means “wearing a mask, playing the actor.” That was the sin of Ananias and Sapphira. They sold a piece of their property for an amount. After discussing with his wife, Ananias kept back a part of the money for himself, but brought the rest to the church and put it at the apostles’ feet, pretending that he had given all his money to the church. But the Spirit revealed Peter Ananias’ hypocrisy, and when he rebuked Ananias, he fell down dead on the spot. About three hours later, Sapphira entered the church, and after Peter’s admonition she too fell down dead. The church came to understand that both Ananias and Sapphira lied about the sale of their property and about their giving to the Lord. What was their sin that made God so angry? It was not in robbing Him of money, but in lying to Him and robbing Him of His glory. When Ananias and Sapphira saw earlier how the church appreciated Barnabas for his generous offering, they thought that they too could impress them. Their hearts were filled with pride and they longed for recognition, but outwardly they acted very humbly.
Dear friends, it is easy for us to condemn Ananias and Sapphira for their dishonesty, but how true are we in the matters of God in praying, in giving, in witnessing. Let us not be hypocrites and bring down the judgment of the Lord on us. PRAYER: Dear Lord, I confess that many times I have acted so spiritually before others, whereas in my heart of hearts, I was not right with You – in my prayer, in my giving, in other areas. It is sheerly because of Your grace I remain unpunished. Forgive me and change me. Amen.
