“... In His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ ...” - I Peter 1:3

People manage to survive the worst condition of distress when they are encouraged by words of hope.  Great is the power of hope that it can keep one alive even when nothing else can.  Certainly we must have a hope.  As Christians we are blessed  to have a living hope.  A living hope is sure, certain and real, as opposed to the deceptive, empty, false hope that the world offers.  We see many in our day pinning their hopes in the stock market.  Some have their hopes in their health or their family.  This is a hope based on mere wishful thinking, but the Christian hope is based on the redemptive work of Jesus Christ.

When the New Testament uses the word “hope,” it does not refer to a fond wish or a desire.  It means a “confident assurance based on the Word of God and the  resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.”  This hope is a living hope, in the sense that  it is imperishable.  Other hopes fade like withering flowers.  The hopes of the rich and the proud, all these will die out as a candle that flickers, whereas  Biblical hope is alive and certain.  Someone has put it this way, “Life without Christ is a hopeless end whereas life in Christ is an endless hope.”  The opposite of hope is despair - a hopeless state, which is what unbelievers  without Christ as Savior have!  Dear friends, hope is like an anchor of our soul (Hebrews 6: 19-20), in the midst of tumult and dangers of the present world.  No matter what tribulation, trial or temptation that assaults our mind, we can cling to the absolute assurance that God’s Word will never fail.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, the hope that this world offers fades away because it has no roots, but a believer’s hope gets better and brighter because it is rooted in You and Your living Word.  When I fear the worst, hope brings reminders that You are still in control.  Thank You for this living hope.  Amen.
