“O Lord, You will keep us safe and protect us from such (wicked) people forever.” - Psalm 12:7
When David heard that Goliath, the Philistine, had defied the armies of Israel, he was greatly distressed. He went to King Saul and said, “Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine, your servant will go and fight him.” David’s confidence did not rest on his own strength but in the power of the living God, whose honor had been violated by the Philistines. David saw the uncircumcised Philistine only as a beast. He saw him as a lion and as a bear. That’s why he told Saul, “Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear, this uncircumcised Philistine will be one among them, because he has defiled the armies of the living God.” (I Samuel 17:34-36) Then, throwing away the armor and the sword given to him by Saul, he took five smooth stones in his shepherd’s bag and stood against the Philistine giant.
David was not in any way moved when the Philistine despised him, but with great authority said, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty...”(Vs.45) David’s strength was in his reliance on the Lord, and in the name of the Lord - the name that expressed His character as the most dependable and faithful God who desires the full trust of His people. The Lord honored David’s zeal, his confidence and his trust in Him. He caused the very first stone which David slung to strike the forehead of Goliath and made him fall face down!
Dear friends, when we are surrounded by evil forces, let us remember that we are not alone but God is beside us to protect us and preserve our lives. Only let us be careful to trust Him and stand with zeal for Him alone.PRAYER: Dear Lord, as Goliath was getting ready to attack little David, You empowered David to take the initiative and strike his opponent, and thus protected his life from his powerful enemy. Let me also, like David, trust You and be zealous for You even when my life is under threat. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
