“People of Israel, return to the Lord, … Come to the sanctuary … Serve the Lord your God." - II Chronicles 30: 6-8
As soon as Hezekiah became King of Judah, he commanded the priests to sanctify themselves, cleanse the temple and restore the worship. Accordingly, they carried out the accumulated trash and all the remnants of idolatrous worship, took them down to the Kidron Valley and burned them. Next, the king and the rulers met at the temple to offer the sin offerings to the Lord. The people also sanctified themselves and brought a large number of sacrifices to the Lord. Next, Hezekiah invited all the people in Israel and Judah to celebrate the Passover to the Lord.
Since the days of Solomon there had not been a Passover involving the entire nation, and Hezekiah wanted to unite the people spiritually even though they were divided politically. And in response to his invitation, very large crowd of people assembled in Jerusalem to celebrate the Feast of the Unleavened Bread – the Passover. There was so much joy that Hezekiah decided to continue the celebration for another week. After the feast, the people returned and in their home towns, they smashed the sacred stones and cut down the Asherah poles.
“It is one thing to have an exciting time praising God in a two-week special meeting, but it is quite something else to return home afterward and live like people who have met the Lord,” writes Warren Wiersebe.
Dear friends, if we are to have revival, we must begin with cleansing all the “rubbish” that we have accumulated over years. If we confess our sins and offer ourselves as living sacrifice (Romans 12:1-2), then the Lord will surely bring a mighty revival among us. PRAYER: Dear Lord, Hezekiah was brought up in a godless family. Even then, he was so zealous for You that he not only purified himself but his whole nation to serve You and worship You. Let me also live an exemplary life and lead people towards You. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
