“The words of Amos, one of the shepherds of Tekoa...”  - Amos 1:1

Amos means “a burden” in Hebrew.  Amos was a shepherd in Tekoa, a small town of Judah, twelve miles from Jerusalem.  The region being sandy was more fit for  pastoral than for agricultural purposes.  Amos therefore owned and tended flocks, and collected sycamore figs.  Each time he brought his wool and figs into Jerusalem, he was confronted by the sinfulness of his own people.  The scene of Amos’ ministry was Bethel, where the idol calves were set up. (Amos 7: 10-13)  In Amos’ day, the rule of law was despised, the nation’s leaders were not only contributing to the breakdown of law and order, they were causing it, and the standards of morality was so low, the people openly practised all kinds of sextual sins!  God chose Amos to go to the kings and religious leaders and to give them a simple, but certain word of warning -   either repent of your sin and return to God, or suffer the consequences. God gave Amos a burden for his people in his day.  He saw their activity as a blatant disrespect for God and outright blasphemy, and he knew God would not  tolerate their rebellion forever.  He, like Peter, Paul, David, Matthew, was one of the weak things of the world whom God chose to confound the mighty.  He was only a shepherd among shepherds, but the words which he spoke were not his own.  They were words that was given to him by the Spirit.

Dear friends, we may not be highly educated, eloquent in speech or have public influence.  Let us  remember that God chooses the weak things of the world to shame the strong.  He who made the humble shepherd reprove the arrogance of Israel can use even us in some way for spreading His Kingdom work here on this earth.

PRAYER: Dear Lord,  Amos was an ordinary shepherd but You chose him to be Your ambassador to stand before kings to proclaim the news about the coming judgment on Israel.  Though I am weak and despised, since I am chosen by You, You will empower  me to do Your work.  Amen.
