“... A broken and contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.”

- Psalm 51: 17

God uses broken things. Mary broke a jar of costly perfume at Jesus’ feet and anointed His head with oil. Jesus took bread and broke it as a picture of His body given for us. God uses broken hearts as well. That is what repentance is all about. God is not pleased just with material sacrifices. He looks at the heart and says, “If your heart is broken, then I can cleanse it.”

The background for today’s reading is King David’s adultery with Bathsheba and murder of her husband Uriah. (II Samuel 11-12) David could have brought all kinds of sacrifices to please God. But by doing that he would not have received God’s forgiveness. God was waiting for David’s sacrifice of a broken heart. That is why David said, “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.” (Psalm 51: 17) David’s sins of adultery and murder should have brought him condemnation and death. But David did not die. Why? Because he sought earnestly for God’s mercy. He cried, “Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your unfailing love; according to Your great compassion blot out my transgressions.” (Psalm 51:1) He trusted in God’s power to forgive his grievous sins. God looked at David’s broken heart and cleansed him in and out.

Dear friends, God looks at our heart, not our hands.  He wants sincerity in our hearts, not in our religious routine.   Let us bring to Him the sacrifice of our broken heart and receive His mercy.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, I confess that I have offended You. I grieve deeply for what I have done. I realize no account of my offering or my religious routine will cleanse my sins. I bring to You the sacrifice of my broken heart. Have mercy on me and forgive me. Amen.
