“Consider Him ... so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” - Hebrews 12: 3

All of us become weary in our lives sometime or another - our incessant activity, the deadlines and demands, the daily schedule and the periodic feelings of failure make us weary. There is nothing wrong in feeling weary, but it is wrong to become discouraged and give up. Growing weary is the consequence of many experiences.

For example, we can be weary of waiting. In Psalm 69:3, David writes, “I am weary with my crying out; my throat is parched. My eyes grow dim with waiting for my God.” (ESV) We can be weary of studying and learning. Solomon writes in Ecclesiastes 12:12, “Of making many books there is no end, and much study wearies the body.” We can be weary of fighting the enemy. “He (Eleazar) rose and struck down the Philistines until his hand was weary and clung to the sword.” (II Samuel 23:10 - ESV) We can be weary of criticisms of our enemies. The psalmist writes in Psalm 6:6,7, “I am weary with my moaning, every night I flood my bed with tears. I drench my couch with weeping. ... My eyes grow weak because of all my foes.”

Dear friends, there is a word of encouragement today for those of us who are weary. Since our Lord never grows weary, He is able to give strength to the weary. (Isaiah 40: 28-31) Our Savior says in Matthew 11:28, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” In place of our exhaustion and fatigue, He gives us rest. All He asks is that we come to Him, spend time with Him, talk to Him, listen in silence and be at rest in His presence.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, I feel weary because of the pressures of life, by failures and disappointments.  I come to You and lay down all my burdens.  I want to lean on You and hear Your gentle voice of encouragement.  Refresh my soul, renew my mind and make me fit for Your service.  Amen.
