“... He humbled Himself and became obedient to death - even death on a Cross!” - Philippians 2: 8
Humility is a great virtue of the saints of God. Jesus not only taught the greatness of humility, He exhibited humility in His own life, especially during His last meal with His disciples. Dr. Samuel Logan Brengle was a brilliant American University student and a great orator. Upon graduation he was called to preach in an influential church. But there was an emptiness and dissatisfaction in his heart. At that time he read about the Salvation Army, how they worked among underprivileged people of Britain. He felt that this was the type of work God had called him to do. He resigned from his church, sailed to London and offered his services to General William Booth, the founder of the Salvation Army. He was accepted for service and put in training garrison with many students most of whom, though full of zeal, did not even have formal education. Brengle’s first work was to clean a pile of muddy boots of those students. As he brushed away the mud, a battle raged in his heart. “Was it for this that I have renounced my fashionable church and come to London?” Brengle had almost succumbed to the tempter’s voice when a verse of Scripture came to his mind. “He took a towel and girded Himself.” (John 13:4) In a moment he discovered the tactics of the devil and cried from his heart, “Lord, if You could take a towel and wash Your disciples’ feet, surely I can brush and clean my fellow students’ dirty boots.”
Dear friends, Saint Augustine said, it was pride that changed angels into devils, it is humility that makes men as angels. By imitating our Lord’s humility in our lives, let us prove to the world that we are His disciples.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, let me not be ashamed to “lower my standards” before others. Let me be willing to stoop down to the level of those whom I consider as my subordinates or juniors. Let Your example of washing Your disciples’ feet melt my heart and let it motivate me to follow Your example. Amen.
