“... whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” - Mark 11:24
When Jesus was leaving Bethany, He was hungry. He approached a fig tree which was full of leaves. The presence of leaves could mean the presence of fruit. So hoping to find figs, Jesus drew near it, but He could not find any fruit there. He cursed the tree saying, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” The next day, when Jesus and His disciples passed that way again, they observed that the tree had withered from the roots up. Seeing this, Peter said, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree you cursed has withered.” The intention of Jesus here was not to destroy the tree, but He wanted to teach His disciples the important lesson of faith through this incident. Whenever Jesus started His conversation with the prefix, “I tell you,” this meant that He was going to say something of particular importance. Here, He talked about lifting up a mountain and hurling it into the sea. In Jewish imagery, a mountain signified something very big - like a huge problem so strong and immovable that stands in the way. To remove a mountain and cast it into the sea means removing an obstacle that is beyond the possibility of removal, but not beyond the power of God. A prayer of faith puts us in touch with that power. Half-hearted prayer accomplishes nothing. We should firmly believe that God can accomplish what seems impossible, if it is His will.
Dear friends, nothing is too hard for the Lord. We must never limit God’s power. Are you praying for some problem of a great magnitude? Do not write off your situation as hopeless. Pray with great faith. Our Lord God, who is all powerful, can remove the mountains, and you will experience the outcome of praying a prayer of faith. PRAYER: Heavenly Father, how astonished Your disciples would have been to see the green leafy fig tree completely withered and dried at Your Word of power. Today, I pray that You may release the same power and remove this huge mountain from my life. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
