“Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” - Proverbs 16:18

Pride is one of the qualities which the Lord hates the most. I Peter 5:5 says, “God opposes the proud.”

In today’s  text, we read about Satan’s pride.  When created, Satan was an obedient angel, but later he rebelled against God and he wanted to usurp God’s throne!  Ezekiel 28:12 describes him as, “The model of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty,” and verse 13 names the nine jewels that adorned him – Ruby, topaz, emerald, chrysolite, onyx, jasper, sapphire,  turquoise and beryl.  He was anointed as a Cherub, the guardian angel, and he walked blameless on the holy mount of God.  He was also called Lucifer, (Isaiah 14:12) which means “morning star” in Latin.  But what happened later?  His pride and his selfish ambitions led him to sin.  He exalted himself above God.  So God judged him and cast him off from His presence.  Now Satan rules as the prince of this world, but the Lord Jesus had already defeated him by His precious blood, which He shed on the Cross.  Satan will be eternally bound one day and will be cast into the hell finally. (Revelation 20:10)

Dear friends, when the “I” in us is bigger, it always causes some problems.  Let us examine ourselves to see if we are proud in our hearts.  If so, it is time that we humble ourselves before God and men. Let us realize that we excel in an area, only because God has given us His grace to do so.  If we are high-minded or have an exaggerated opinion of ourselves, then it causes us to look down upon others.  This attitude is extremely detestable to the Lord.  How terrible it would be to be opposed by God and be punished by Him!  So let us make every effort to practise true humility every day of our lives.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, all that I have, my health, education, riches, job, status, beauty, strength etc., comes as a gift from You and it is by Your grace that I’ve received these from You.  Let me not exalt myself on any account and become proud.  Give me a humble heart always.  In Jesus’ name I pray.  Amen.
