“A faithful man will be richly blessed, but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished.” - Proverbs 28:20
To covet means “to desire,” “to wish for wrongfully,” “an ardent desire.” The tenth and last of the Ten Commandments says, “You shall not covet ...,” but perhaps it is the most difficult one to obey because the first nine Commandments are with regard to outward action, but this one deals with the hidden desires of the heart. Ahab was the king of Israel. Close to the palace of the king there was a vineyard which belonged to Naboth. Ahab wanted to convert this vineyard of Naboth into a vegetable garden. He offered to buy Naboth’s vineyard by paying him its worth, or otherwise he said that he would give Naboth a better vineyard somewhere else. It was really a good deal. But Naboth was not willing to accept Ahab’s offer because it was his ancestral property. Disappointed, Ahab returned home and lay on his bed angry and sulking. Seeing her husband lying down in frustration, Jezebel took control of the situation, plotted a series of wicked schemes and finally murdered innocent Naboth, and took possession of his property! But can any injustice escape the eyes of the Lord? He sent prophet Elijah to pronounce His judgment on Ahab, that the king would die dishonorably and dogs would lick his blood. As for Jezebel, she would die and be eaten by the dogs. After many years, every word that the Lord spoke through Elijah was fulfilled. (II Kings 9)
Dear friends, let us be satisfied with what we have and let us not covet anything that belongs to others. Instead, when need arises let us tell them to our heavenly Father, who will supply them to us according to His glorious riches in heaven. Amen. PRAYER: Heavenly Father, give me a contented heart. Whenever I see my neighbor’s belongings, let me not be filled with greed or let me not wish to acquire them by illegal ways. Instead, let me put forward my desire to You and receive what I need with Your blessing, according to Your will. Amen.
