Read : Psalm 1: 1-6

“His delight is the law of the Lord, and on His law he meditates day and night.” - Psalm 1: 2

“Meditate” is a figurative word. It pictures a cow chewing her cud. The cow has several compartments in its stomach. It grazes the grass in the morning in the cool of the day. Then when it gets hot in the middle of the day, the cow lies down under a tree and begins to chew the cud; it brings up the food it had in the morning and masticates it. This process goes over and over again. This is what we do when we meditate. We recollect what we have read. Reading the Bible without meditating on it is like eating without chewing! Meditation is to the inner man, what digestion is to the outer man. If we do not digest our food we would fall sick.

Dear friends, most of us read the Bible casually and carelessly.  We read the Word of God and it has no effect on us.  That’s why the Word of God has become so insipid in our lives, it has no power over us. Let us saturate our mind with Scripture that when we face a decision or a temptation, we will automatically remember the Scripture that relates to that particular situation.   Let us read it much, read it often, brood over, think over it, meditate over it day and night.  When we are awake at night let us think of a verse.  When we get up in the morning, no matter how we feel, let us bring to mind a verse and make the Word of God the important element in our day.  It is through the Word that God reveals Himself.  It is the Word of God  that  brings refreshment and invigoration to us.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, let me not just read Your Word hurriedly or as a ritual every day, but let me meditate on it. As a cow chews the cud, let me bring to mind the Scripture verse that I read every morning and be encouraged by it throughout the day. Reveal Yourself to me through Your Word. Amen.
