“He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit He prunes. ...” - John 15 : 2

New shoots in the vine must be cut off because they can end up sucking the life out of the vine, causing grapes to not grow. Most new grape growers fail to have a good harvest because they do not prune enough. Good pruning creates a strong root system, improves the health of the vine, and most importantly increases the yield. Pruning is important in our spiritual life because anything that hinders our spiritual growth should be removed in order to maximise fruitfulness. Dear friends, are you being pruned right now? If so, understand these truths.

First, God does not prune us indiscriminately. He knows what He is doing. Since He is working to make us more like Christ, He only removes what is necessary and avoids unnecessary injury.
Second, pruning involves pain. The Father’s pruning knife is sharp, but it is designed not to damage us or destroy us. It is only to get us to bear more fruit.
Third, pruning process may be short or may last long. It may be for a day or a week, or a year. God may allow many unpleasant things to prune us - failures, broken relationships, illness, etc. But in the midst of this process, we must remember that this pruning ultimately is for God’s glory. The riches, the fullest, the most fruitful lives are those that have been strengthened through the painful process of tribulation. So let us not become weary when being pruned. Let us see the purpose of our problems from the standpoint of God’s wisdom and of eternity. If we interpret these trials in their relationship to life’s blessings, we would be able to cheer up and praise the Lord for them all.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, let me understand that You have a purpose in my pain and tears. You know what is best for me, and so when I am pruned, let me not become weary, but praise You because these trials are going to make me Christ-like. I submit to You. Cut away the dead wood in me and make me fruitful. Amen.
