“Do not quench the Spirit.” - I Thessalonians 5: 19

The indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit in the believer provides an inexhaustible and constant source of spiritual direction and empowerment. The ministry of the Holy Spirit, however is not automatic and is not effective without cooperation on the part of the individual, hence the command in I Thessalonians 5:19, “Do not quench the Spirit.”

Quenching is a concept used in relation to extinguishing or suppressing a fire. So quenching the Holy Spirit is suppressing or otherwise obstructing the ministry of the Spirit in a believer. In other words, it is saying “No” and replacing the will of the Spirit with the will of the individual. The opposite of this is yielding to the will of God. Yieldedness to the will of God implies first yieldedness to the Word of God and second yieldedness to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The supreme illustration of such yieldedness is of course, our Lord Jesus Christ. Philippians 2: 5-8 speaks of His submission to His Father and His humility. Here Christ is revealed as being willing to be what God wanted Him to be, willing to do what God wanted Him to do, and willing to go where God wanted him to go.

Dear friends, when we are in the will of God we may have to forsake certain things our flesh desires.  Like Christ, we must say, “Not my will, but Thine be done.” (Luke 22:42)  This is possible only when we yield to the Holy Spirit who resides in us, and give Him the absolute control of our lives.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, help me to yield my will to Your will. Let me stop presenting my body as an instrument of unrighteousness, and once for all present myself to You wholly. Let Your Holy Spirit direct my life and guide my steps everyday. Amen.
