"... I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven.”

- Nehemiah 1:4

On hearing the news about the city of Jerusalem, Nehemiah, who was at the time in the palace at Susa, developed a deep concern over the affairs of the city. He could not immediately do anything to alleviate the problem. He mourned. He wept. But he did not stop with that. He took a decision to FAST & PRAY before the God of heaven! Nehemiah started fasting where he was. He did not stop going to his duty as the king's cupbearer. Yet he fasted and prayed.

Firstly, he remembered that his God was a great and awesome God, who unfailingly followed the promise and agreement that He made with His people.

Secondly, he reminded God that He is obligated to open His ears and hear his cry, according to His own words.

Thirdly, he realised that his supplication should be preceded by repentance from sins. So, he humbled himself and admitted about his and his people's shortcomings, and sought the forgiveness of God. Then he presented the actual petition that the Lord should give him success and grant him favor in the eyes of the king.

Dear friends, when we are deeply concerned about something, about which we are unable to do anything, we should learn to do what Nehemiah did. It is alright to feel sad and remain sorrowful with pain in the heart and tears in the eyes. But, immediately we should spring up from our despair and take a decision to do what Nehemiah did. We should come before the throne of grace, wherever we are, with fasting. Let us remember that our God is a great and mighty God, mighty to deliver. Let us humble ourselves before Him, confessing our sins and the sins of those about whom we have concern. Let us remind God about His obligation to keep His covenant. And surely the Lord will hear our prayers and grant us favour and success. Amen.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, You are a great and awesome God. You always keep Your covenant with Your loved ones. I come before You just as I am. Forgive all my iniquities and cleanse me inside out with the blood of Jesus. Deliver me from my problems and magnify Your name through me. Amen.
