“Is not this the great Babylon I have built as the royal residence, by my mighty power?” - Daniel 4:30

After hearing the meaning of his dream, Nebuchadnezzar not only thought high of himself but even acted arrogantly. But the Lord wanted to put an end to his haughtiness and make him realize that He, the Lord, alone is the Ruler of the whole Universe. Once again he used a dream to communicate His message to this arrogant king. In this dream the king saw a flourishing tree that sheltered many birds and animals. He then heard an angel commanding the tree to be chopped down and be cut off, and its stumps be bound with iron and bronze. Then the angel announced that ‘someone’ would live like a beast and after a particular  time be restored back. And once again Daniel interpreted the king’s dream. He said that it was the decree of the Most High issued against the king. He said to the king that he would be driven away from people and live like cattle. After a period of time, when he acknowledged that the Most High is sovereign over the kingdoms of men, he would be restored. But even after being warned, the king did not humble himself. Pride ruled his heart. The Lord gave him twelve months to repent but to no effect. One day when he was walking on the roof of the royal palace, the king exalted himself and talked words of pride, of self appreciation and self glorification. As these words were still in his mouth, he was driven away from people and ate grass like cattle. Later, when he acknowledged God’s sovereignty his sanity was restored.

Dear friends, pride destroys us. It separates us from God. So, we must not become proud, and also not allow pride to enter into our hearts. When God gives us leadership, let us be humble and show kindness to people who are under us.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, how painful it is to read that even after witnessing Your greatness and power, and even after receiving warnings, King Nebuchadnezzar failed to humble himself. Give me a teachable spirit to correct myself when You convict me. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
