In Israel, the firstborns are highly privileged because Israel was God’s first-born son. (Exodus 4:22) (Hosea 11:1) Before bringing out the Israelites from the land of Egypt, the Lord sent ten plagues among the Egyptians. But the last of them was the most terrifying one. On one solemn night, i.e on the Passover night, all the firstborn sons and all the firstborn livestock in Egypt died and there was a great cry throughout the land. He spared the firstborn sons and firstborn of all the livestock of the Israelites. Exodus 13:1-6. Not only once in a year – that is on the Passover – were the Israelites reminded of God’s grace and power, but each time a firstborn male came into the world, he had to be redeemed, because the Lord protected His people and saved their firstborn sons and the firstborn of all livestock, all the firstborns belonged to Him. They were sanctified and they were set apart for God’s exclusive possession. The Lord commanded the Israelites that the parents should bring their firstborn sons to the Lord and offer one year old lamb or two doves or two young pigeons and offer them as burnt offering (Leviticus 12: 6-8) When a firstborn son was thus redeemed, it gave the parents the opportunity to explain how God had rescued the firstborn on the first Passover night and how He had slain all the Egyptian firstborn.

Dear friends, though the first born sons are special to the Lord, Let us dedicate all our children to Him and pray that they should be sanctified by the blood of the Passover Lamb – Jesus Christ and be His exclusive possessions.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, even though the firstborn child in my family is special to us and to You, at this time I bring to Your altar all my children. Cleanse them by the blood of the Redeemer, Jesus Christ, the Passover Lamb. Let them never go astray in this wicked world. Save them. Amen.
