“Do not be like Cain, …why did he murder him? (Abel) Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s righteous.” - I John 3:12

Both Cain and Abel brought offerings to the Lord.  God accepted Abel and his offering but He rejected Cain and his offering. Why?  Not because of his offerings but because of Cain’s attitude.  His heart was not right with God.  Hebrews 11:4 says that it was “by faith” that Abel offered a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain.  So when God rejected his offering Cain became very angry.  He harbored bitterness against his brother in his heart.  He envied his brother because he found favor in the eyes of the Lord.   His hatred became so strong that he plotted to kill him somehow.  He probably murdered his brother several times in his heart before he actually committed the deed.  Unable to suppress his evil feelings, one day he enticed his innocent brother, lied to him, took him to the field and there he killed him brutally.

Finally, after committing the horrible murder, he took it very casually and argued with God to prove that he was innocent!  But how can he, a mortal, sinful man stand before the righteous Judge?  The Lord put a curse on him that he would no longer be able to enjoy the fruit of his labor but would be a restless wanderer.  Let us be warned that it is dangerous to harbor unforgiveness and bitterness in our hearts because Satan slyly makes use of these opportunities and leads us to commit more grievous sins.  We might not physically commit murder, but if we hold grudges against someone and hate them, it is equivalent to murdering them. (I John 3:15)  Let us never, never give a loophole to Satan to gain ground in our hearts.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, Cain’s envy led to anger, jealousy and hatred towards Abel, his brother which became uncontrollable and ended up in murder.  Let me not allow Satan to take control of me by yielding to his temptations which appear to be harmless. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
