“... He began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” - Mark 10: 47

Our Lord was on His way to Jerusalem and the Cross. He entered Jericho in a public way, accompanied by the crowd going to the Passover. A blind beggar named Bartimaeus was sitting by the road. The blind beggar was a common sight in Palestine. Beggars often waited along the roads near cities because that was where they were able to contact the most people. When Bartimaeus saw Jesus passing by, he shouted aloud, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” The beggar was not pleading for money but for his healing, because he was desperate. He lived each day in total darkness. He felt so keenly his deep need and so he was crying out in bold faith to the Light of the world. As a result he received not only his sight but also the “Light of life.” The healing of the beggar illustrates the way in which we can lay hold on all of God’s provisions. The words that Jesus told him, “Receive your sight, your faith has healed you,” have a double meaning. On one level, the blind man was saved physically, so that he could now see. But on a deeper level, his faith had saved him spiritually. This is a greater miracle. Instantly God forgave his sins and imparted new life to him, making him a child of God.

Dear friends, it is not just the blind man who needed to cry, “Have mercy on me,” but it is us, for daily we commit sins of thought, word and deed. Like the blind beggar, let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in time of need. (Hebrews 4: 15-16)

PRAYER: Dear Lord, I am spiritually a blind sinner, and the only way I come to Your throne of grace is to ask for Your mercy. Hear my cry and restore me the light. Give me a great faith that honors You. Let me dare to believe You for the impossible. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
