After King Xerxes honoured Haman, all the royal officials knelt before Haman and paid honor except Mordecai. Mordecai did this not because of envy or pride, but he thought it was injustice to give such honor to Haman, an Amalekite, one of those people whom the Lord detested. (Exodus 17:16) Haman became furious that Mordecai did not kneel down or pay him honor, and planned to take revenge on not only Mordecai but also on his people - the Jews. He asked King Xerxes to issue an edict to destroy them. One writer observed, “Esther’s life could be compared to a chess game. God and Satan as invisible players moved real life queens and nobles! When Satan put Haman into place, it was as if he announced, “Check”! God then positioned Esther and Mordecai in order to put Satan into “Checkmate”! The Lord was not taken by surprise by this plot of Haman. He had foreseen it and allowed it for a purpose.

The Lord’s wisdom is seen in the Book of Esther in arranging the smallest events so as to produce great results. Though Mordecai had provoked Haman to the utmost, he was not put to death at once. Haman restrained himself to do so. It was God’s plan that Mordecai must not die a violent death by Haman’s hand.

Dear friends, the enemies of God can never do harm to His people more than the limit permitted by God. The wicked carry with them the weapons of their own destruction, and when they rage most against the most High, the Lord of all turns things around and out of it would bring good for His people and glory to Himself. So let us not faint or give up hope - when evil triumphs. Let us trust in the Lord who is infinite in wisdom and power.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, when people rise up against me unjustly, let me have the confidence that You are in control and You will not allow them to harm me beyond Your limit.  You will not allow evil to triumph, and one day You will turn the situation and establish Your righteousness to the glory of Your name.  Amen.
