"Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!" - Philippians 4:4
At Philippi, Paul and Silas were falsely accused by the owners of the slave girl and were brought to the court. After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into the prison. They underwent great pain physically, sitting in a dark dungeon, with their backs bleeding from the scourge and feet fastened in the stocks to prevent even the relief which a change of position might afford. In addition, their minds were affected with a sense of deep injustice done to them. Most men, under such circumstances would have been wild with rage against their persecutors and would have doubted the favor of God. But in the darkest and bitterest hour of their sufferings, these faithful disciples, Paul and Silas brought forth the richest fruits of their faith and piety. At midnight, they prayed and sang praises to God! Men do not pray when they are enraged nor when they are bitter. But Paul and Silas not only prayed, they sang praises to the Lord. This was the clearest evidence that the hurt feelings they had when they were whipped, when they were thrust into the dungeon and when they were fastened to the stocks completely vanished by midnight and they were filled with a spirit of prayer and praise. The song they sang was not a gloomy one coming out from the hearts of suffering prisoners, but it swelled up with exuberant tones and was offered to praise the Lord. And the result? The Lord came instantly to their relief in a manner peculiar to Himself.
Dear friends, how do we respond in times of rejection, abandonment and persecution? Let Paul and Silas be our models.PRAYER: Almighty God, when people accuse me unjustly and when they act ungratefully for the good I have done to them, let me not become wild with rage against them. Instead, let me glorify You with my praises. You will certainly protect me from the snares of men. Amen.
