Lord, You Alone Are My Refuge

Read : 1 Samuel 23:7–18

Verse: "Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me, for in You my soul takes refuge." - Psalm 57:1

Many of David's psalms date from those dark and sad days when he was hunted like a bird upon the mountains. In all these psalms, we see evidences of his great suffering. Though he was innocent, though he was willing to give himself to prayer and ministry on their behalf, yet his own men pursued him with such unrelenting malice. What was David's response in these painful situations? We see him appeal only to God. We can read phrases like, "Save me, O God, by your name; vindicate me by your might." (Psalm 54:1) "I cry out to God Most High, to God, who fulfills His purpose for me". (Psalm 57:2) "I have no refuge; no one cares for my life. I cry to you, O Lord; I say, "You are my refuge"". (Psalm 142:4, 5) What depths of pain lie in these phrases! David does not retaliate or avenge his wrong, but commits himself to Him who judges righteously. He was assured that the Righteous One will shelter him during times of trials, and ultimately bring out his righteousness.

Dear friends, are you unjustly persecuted, side-tracked, looked down with contempt, or ridiculed by people? Do not try to take revenge on those who act against you. Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him. Time may elapse before the hour of deliverance may strike, but be patient. God will certainly arise and exalt you. For, the needy shall not always be forgotten, nor the expectation of the poor perish forever.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, what great suffering David underwent - forsaken by his own men, and pursued by Saul. Never did he take revenge on them, but waited for Your judgement. When I am mistreated, let me also take refuge in You till You exalt me in due time. In Jesus' name. Amen.
