Is Your Inner Man Spiritually Strengthened?

"I pray that ... He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being."

- Ephesians 3: 16

There is an inner man just as real as our physical body. In the physical world we might lift weights, do exercises and so strengthen ourselves, but in the spiritual world, as believers we cannot strengthen ourselves! The task belongs solely to the Holy Spirit. However, we do have a role in this spiritual strengthening. Our job is to submit, and so we need to yield and surrender ourselves to God's Spirit so that He would strengthen us. The Greek word for power is "dunamis." To be strengthened with "dunamis" means, "to have abundant strength to bear trials, to perform our duties and to glorify His name." We should not think that only during the times of suffering we need to be strengthened with power. We need strength in everyday of our lives and in every circumstance. Is it temptation? We need strength of the Spirit to do the right thing so that Jesus might be honored. Is it witnessing? We need His strength to speak the truth regardless of what the world may think of us for speaking it.

Dear friends, Paul is praying for every saint - not some special class of elite, so called "spiritual" Christians - to possess genuine spiritual power, which ultimately is a mark of every believer who submits to God's Word and His Spirit. Do we lack spiritual power in our Christian lives? Then we need to do a simple inventory - we need to look at our "obedient quotient." Is our obedience to God's Word immediate, or delayed, or are we disobedient? Let us yield to the Spirit so that we would be strengthened to say "yes" to the Lord and "no" to our flesh. Daily victory over sin is one of the greatest miracles a believer can experience.

Prayer: Dear Lord, I pray that You strengthen my inner being by Your power. Let me have the spiritual power to bear everyday trials, to live as a mature, stable and wise Christian in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation and to accomplish Your purpose through me. Amen.
