“... I have made myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible.” - I Corinthians 9:19
Because of the sacrifice, determination and untiring efforts of many missionaries, multitudes of souls have been led to Christ through the conviction of the Holy Spirit.
John Paton was a godly man. When he attended a missionary campaign, the Holy Spirit moved his heart to commit his life for the cannibals in Hebrides Islands. Inspite of many hurdles, at the age of 34, he took his wife Mary with him and left for Hebrides in 1858. The sorcerers there vehemently opposed them. They mistreated them and threatened to kill them. Paton, from the small wooden hut he had built, could watch the people eating human flesh and indulging in revelry. He slowly became friendly with them and learnt their language. The Lord blessed John Paton and Mary with a son within a year. But tragedy struck soon. His wife was affected with viral fever, and due to lack of medical facilities, she died. In a week’s time, the child died too. Paton dug their graves with his own hands and buried them. He was overwhelmed with grief. His life was constantly under threat. Once they compelled him to eat food, casting magic spells on it in order to kill him. But nothing happened to Paton. Seeing this many believed in Jesus, the God of Paton. Gradually, the whole island accepted Jesus as their Lord! He established churches, built schools. When he died in 1909, he had already seen thousands of souls worshipping the living God!
Dear friends, we may not have a call to go to an island where cannibals live, but let us serve the Lord with undeterred passion and fervor wherever He has placed us, till the last breath of our life.PRAYER: Dear Lord, you have chosen me to serve You. Let me not despise Your call. Let the burden for the perishing souls dominate my thoughts, and let me use every opportunity to win them for Christ, not bothering about the opposition. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
