“But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine. ...” - Daniel 1: 8

A 400 year old redwood tree suddenly toppled to the forest floor. People wondered what caused the death of such a majestic giant tree? Was it fire? Lightning? A strong wind? A postmortem examination revealed a startling cause. Tiny beetles had crawled under the bark and literally eaten the fibres away from the inside. Although it looked healthy on the outside, in the inside it was virtually hollow and one day finally collapsed.

Dear friends, the same thing happens when we refuse to stand our ground for Christ. Every time we compromise and take bad decisions, our soul is corroded. Eventually, the little decisions build up and we become hollow on the inside, even though we may look great on the outside. Let this not happen to us. Remember godly convictions yield godly rewards. Look at Daniel. He resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine. (Daniel 1:8) Instead of going with the flow or taking the easy road, Daniel and his friends chose the narrow road. Is it any surprise that God granted Daniel favor? In I Samuel 2:30, God says, “Those who honor me I will honor.” Look what God did for this zealous teenager - God protected Daniel. He prospered Daniel and He promoted Daniel. Daniel’s decision not to eat the king’s food may not have seemed important at that time, but his decision shaped his future. We talk of Daniel centuries later precisely because of his decision. If he had not made the right choice, he would have been a forgotten Jew in Babylon, who acted like everyone else. So let us not allow the world around to squeeze us into its mold. Let us not bend to worldly pressures and compromise what is right.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, let me be careful when I take decisions - let me not allow the world to pressurize me to take decisions that are not pleasing to You.  Let not my bad choices eventually lead to the decay of my soul.  In Jesus’ name I pray.  Amen.
