“Moses could not enter the Tent of Meeting because ... the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.” - Exodus 40:35

In the Old Testament period, once a year the high priest would enter into the Most High Place of the Temple to make atonement for the sins of the whole Israel. God is holy and mankind is not, and the living flesh would instantly die if it encountered the unshielded, uncovered glory of God. So before he went into the veil, the priest had the doubt whether he would come out alive. He would dip his finger into the blood of the sacrificial lamb or goat and daub it on his earlobes, his thumbs and his big toes. He would tie a rope around his ankle so that if he dies inside the Holy Place he would be pulled out by the other priests! Next, the priest would take the bowl containing hot embers at the bottom. He would take a handful of holy incense and drop it on top of the embers which would create a thick billowing cloud of sweet smelling smoke. He then would go behind the veil. He took care that enough smoke would be provided in order to hide everything in view. The priest would fulfill all his duties including the sprinkling of blood, amidst cloud of incense covered the entire area. It was to keep the high priest from seeing God’s glory.

Dear friends, let us consecrate ourselves before entering into His presence, lest we be consumed by His holiness. He is holy and nothing unholy can enter into His presence and live. So, let us be cleansed by the blood of Jesus, which alone can blot out all our sins and stains, and make us worthy to stand in His presence.
