“... Each day has enough trouble of its own” - Matthew 6:34
Joni Eareckson writes as follows:
“Don’t grasp for the future, Joni,” my dad used to say, “Pay attention to the present.” That’s the way my daddy lived, and that’s the way he worked. Whenever my dad would build stone walls on the farm, he wouldn’t rush. He would pick up a rock, brush off the dirt, turn it over in his hands and line it up this way and that, trying to place it just right. He paid attention to what he was doing at that moment. As a result, even forty years later the walls have not crumbled.” Dear friends, many of us make the mistake of thinking far ahead, neglecting the present. We rush through the present moment in order to quickly go to the next. As a result, we do not pay sufficient attention to the immediate problem or need. Oswald Chambers said, “Grace is for right now. It is not the process toward some future goal but an end in and of itself. If we would only realize this, then each moment would become rich with meaning and purpose.” In Ephesians 5:15-16, Paul said, “Be very careful, then, how you live - not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.” So let us not waste the precious moments of today, worrying or planning for tomorrow. If there is anyone to whom we need to extend our help today, let us do it wholeheartedly. If there is anything that needs to be fixed today, let us do it without postponing. And let us do with perfection whatever work that is placed in our hands today. Ecclesiastes 9:10 says, “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.” God is interested in the situation we find ourselves right now. He may use our present circumstances to prepare for the future.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I turn today over in my hands and ask You to help me to pay attention to what You have in store for me in it. Let me not neglect today’s work, thinking of the work that I need to do tomorrow. Whatever I do, let it be perfect for the glory of Your name. Amen.
