“Each of the builders wore his sword at his side as he worked. ...” - Nehemiah 4:18
When Nehemiah started rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem, the enemies surrounded the city on all sides to stop the work. Nehemiah’s own people, the Jews, became weary and frightened on hearing this. But Nehemiah went right ahead with the work. His first step was to pray to the Lord and to post guards at the most conspicuous and vulnerable places on the wall so that the enemies would see that the Jews were prepared to fight. Next he stationed entire families at the lowest points of the wall with swords, spears and bows, (Verse 4:13) so that they would stand together and encourage one another. Thirdly, he devised a new defense plan in which he instructed half of the men to work on the wall, while the other half to stand and guard carrying weapons. Those who carried materials did their work with one hand and held a weapon in the other, and each builder on the wall wore a sword at his side as he worked! Besides, Nehemiah also appointed a man to sound the trumpet as an alarm to inform the enemy’s arrival. Above all, he encouraged the people not to be afraid, but to look to the Lord for help. Because of such careful planning and execution, he was able to complete the building of the wall in a record time of fifty-two days!
Dear friends, when we begin to serve the Lord by building His Kingdom and bring glory to His name, the enemy becomes active. He creates problems and uses them as weapons to destroy our work for the Lord. But let us not withdraw from progressing. Warren Wiersbe writes, “Building and battling are both a normal part of the Christian life if we are faithful disciples.” So let us be vigilant, guard ourselves and carry on the work of the Lord amidst opposition. PRAYER: Heavenly Father, when the enemy disrupts the work I do for You or when he attacks me physically and spiritually, let me not withdraw but let me equip myself with the spiritual armor, guard myself and continue Your work with Your strength. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
