Read : Matthew 18: 1-4

“... the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who then is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” - Matthew 18: 1

The events that happened just prior to this incident would have prompted the disciples ask this question to Jesus.  Jesus had just miraculously provided money for both Himself and Peter to pay temple taxes. He had healed a  demon possessed boy, whom they were unable to heal (Matthew 17: 14-21).  Besides, Peter, James and John had just come down from the mountain, where they had seen Moses and Elijah, and Jesus in His glory.  After witnessing all these now they began to recognize that Jesus indeed is the Messiah, the King and that they would soon have powerful positions in His Kingdom. Jesus did not answer the question of the disciples with words alone, but He made His teaching more impressive by an act.   He called a little  child to Him and set him before them. Jesus pointed out that without genuine humility, child like trust and simplicity  it is impossible even to get into the Kingdom of God.

Dear friends, people yearn to become great, because they mistakenly believe that greatness will make them more valuable to others.  They believe that greatness will make them happy and satisfy their souls. They like to assert themselves and to rely on their own strength and wisdom.  But the Lord’s estimate of true greatness is different.  Jesus says that this attitude is not to be seen in those who wish to enter the Kingdom of God.  “We can enter into God’s Kingdom only by descending from fancied greatness to real  lowliness of mind and becoming as little children.  To rise to the greatness of grace we must go down to the littleness, the simplicity and the trustfulness of childhood”, writes Spurgeon.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, let me have child like simplicity, humility and trust in You.  Let me not run after the fancied “greatness”.  Help me not to be proud or haughty  but be willing to stay humble because this is valuable in Your sight.  Let me set You as my example for humility and greatness.  Amen
