Read : James 5: 1-11

“... See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, and how patient he is ... You too, be patient ...” - James 5: 7,8

One of the most important lessons to learn as a Christian is how to respond rightly when we are wronged. Often when we are treated unjustly, we fall into deep discouragement and say, “Why are they doing this to me?” And sometimes we may even become tempted to take action to make an end to it! James wrote this passage to Christians under such pressure, they were being oppressed by the greedy rich. (James 5: 1-6) James advised them to be patient - Be patient, for the Lord is going to come again. (James 5:7) Be patient as the farmer, for the Lord’s coming is near. (James 5:7-9) Be as patient as the prophets who faced persecution (James 5:10) when they spoke in the name of the Lord, and be patient as Job in the midst of suffering, trials and temptations. (James 5:11)

The farmer waits continually with a hope expecting for his harvest. He waits, working all the while. He waits with his eyes on heaven looking for the autumn and spring rains. He knows that nothing will grow without rains and his impatience can do nothing to hurry the harvest. He waits despite changing circumstances and many uncertainties.

Dear friends, like the farmers, we too should be patient in our afflictions and be encouraged knowing that our reward is ahead as promised by God. The Lord’s coming is soon. Let us not give way to a burst of temper toward those around us who mistreat us, but let us wait for the Lord’s return. Just as the farmer waits on God’s time table, let us also wait for God’s coming.

PRAYER:  Dear Lord, when treated unjustly  let me patiently endure.  Let me not be too quick to burst out in anger or be provoked.  Let me anticipate the coming of Lord Jesus, and recognize Your judgment.  Let me be encouraged that my reward is coming along with You as promised by You.  Amen.
