"There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be open-handed. ...” (Deuteronomy 15:11)

It was a cold winter day and the congregation was hardly participating in the church services. There was a sort of coldness in their hearts too. On that Sunday, the pastor, who was known for his generosity and kindness, gave a thought for his parishioners to contemplate, which truly roused them up from their lethargy. He talked about the platform-dwellers, the homeless, the rag-pickers and the beggars walking down the streets of the city, and said that most of all they needed care. Some of the members squirmed in their seats and exchanged glances. Most of them were thinking that such people were causing nuisances, because they were the ones who committed most of the petty crimes. “How can anyone view them with kindness? Show these people an inch of kindness, and they'll climb on your head," they thought. The pastor concluded saying, "People whom you help may not appreciate you. They may not even be grateful, they may forget you, they may even cheat you, exploit you or rob you. But your Father in heaven sees you and will reward you over and above. So, show atleast an inch of kindness to everyone." He also narrated a few of his experiences in which he was cheated while helping such people. This did not deter him in any way, but he was continuing his mission with compassion, he added. Many were touched by his message and they resolved to do good to such people in future.

Dear friends, let us practice being kind to those whom we think are intolerable and spread the love of Christ around. Let us never fail to extend our arms and help the homeless, the downtrodden and the neglected.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, many times I turn my face away from the poor and the needy. I justify my action saying that they would take too much advantage and finally sit on my head. Forgive me. Help me to be kind to them and spread Your love irrespective of the outcome. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
