“... Before you were born I set you apart.” - Jeremiah 1: 5

Jeremiah had been set apart for God’s ministry. God had marked Jeremiah from conception and reserved him for a special task. Jeremiah was appointed to be a prophet to the nations. But Jeremiah responded to God’s appointment with self doubt. He first objected that he did not know how to speak. He said that he lacked eloquence and ability required for such a public ministry. He also objected that he was only a child. Jeremiah’s age is not mentioned, but possibly he was in his late teens or early 20’s at this time. By using the term “child,” Jeremiah was emphasizing his lack of experience and that he was ill-prepared at that age to be God’s ambassador to the nations.

God gave three answers to Jeremiah’s objections. First, He said that Jeremiah should not use inexperience as an excuse for evading his task. God also said that he would have no choice in the selection of his audience or his message. Rather he was to go to everyone to whom He sent him and say whatever He commanded. Second, as Jeremiah was afraid of his personal safety, God assured him that He himself would be on his side and rescue him from his enemies. Third, the Lord said that He would put His words in Jeremiah’s mouth. Jeremiah need not worry what to say. God would provide the very words he would speak.

Dear friends, when God calls us, let us not hesitate to obey His call because He who calls us is faithful and He will empower us to accomplish the task He has given us.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, You have set me apart for You even before I was born. Let me not give room to fear or doubt, but let me have the confidence that You are with me and will empower me to accomplish the task You have given me. Let me go forth wherever You send me courageously in Your power. Amen.
