“None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.” - I Corinthians 2: 8
“What is so good about Good Friday?” asked an unbeliever, for which the believer said, “It is Good Friday because it is God’s Friday.” The death of Jesus on the Cross was not some afterthought of God, an idea or plan that was originally not intended but was thought of at a later time, rather it WAS the plan of God. God used the wicked deeds of evil men, who crucified the Son of God, to bring salvation to the world. Paul says in I Corinthians 2:8, that these men did not understand it, “for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.”

Pilate, who handed over Jesus to be crucified, did not know who Jesus was. He had of course heard about the healings and miracles done by Jesus. When we read the gospels, Pontius Pilate appears as a tortured soul - a man caught up between the demands of his job and genuine curiosity about Jesus. He asked Jesus, “What is truth?” (John 18: 38) It was not an idle question. He really wanted to know the truth. But he finally yielded to the crowd’s demand. And so Pilate stands guilty of a terrible crime of crucifying the Lord of Glory. Dear friends, before pointing out our finger on someone else, the Romans, the Jews and the soldiers who crucified Jews, let us admit that we too have a part in this. Isaiah 53:5 says, “He was pierced for OUR transgressions, He was crushed for OUR iniquities.”
On this Good Friday, instead of focusing on the gruesome situations that surrounded the death of Christ, and lamenting over His death, let us see behind the horror of Golgotha, the Lord in heaven who was pleased to crush His own Son for our sake. And let us be grateful to God for His immeasurable love for us and His sacrifice to save us, guilty sinners.
PRAYER: Dear God the Father, I thank You for Your great sacrifice that You sent Your only Son to die on the Cross to save me. It is my sin that nailed the Savior on the Cross, my iniquities that led Him to painful death. What can I give in return for this amazing love? I give myself to You as a living sacrifice. Amen.
