“One thing I ask of the Lord, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the
house of the Lord all the days of my life. ...” - Psalm 27: 4
David was a man after God’s own heart. He had a special relationship with God. One reason for David’s intimacy with God was his sincere heart’s desire to seek God’s face. In Psalm 63: 1, he said, “O God, You are my God, earnestly I seek You,”and in Psalm 27: 8, “My heart says of You, “Seek His face!” Your face, Lord, I will seek.” David explains in this psalm, the rewards of seeking God’s face.
First, divine help comes from seeking God’s face. (Verse 9) David experienced God as his helper. He knew that if he was to expect divine help in facing the challenges of his life, he had to keep personal sin in check.
Second, divine care comes from seeking God’s face. (Verse 10) In verse 5, David mused, “For in the day of trouble, He will keep me safe in His dwelling; He will hide me in the shelter of His tabernacle and set me high upon a rock.” David realized that God had protected him in every adverse situation and cared for him when there was no one else to care.
Third, divine guidance comes from seeking His face. (Verse 11) David knew that when he fostered intimate relationship with God, he was able to enjoy His constant leading. In Psalm 23: 1-3, he said, “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. ... He leads me beside quiet waters. He guides me in the path of righteousness.”
Fourth, divine confidence comes from seeking God’s face. (Verse 13) Even during the dark times of his life, David was confident he would see the goodness of the Lord. Why? Because he knew that God’s face brought hope.
Dear friends, we too can experience these blessings if we seek God’s face earnestly. Let us take time to sit and wait patiently before God, and enjoy intimacy of His fellowship.PRAYER: Dear Lord, let me, like David, yearn to seek Your face always. Let me have the earnest desire to be in Your presence all the time, and enjoy the blessings of having intimate fellowship with You. Let me know You as my Helper, Protector, Guide and Comforter. Amen.
