BE MERCIFUL

Sunday, June 21 Read: Matthew 25:34-40

"Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy." - Matthew 5:7

Bible Scholar Barclay writes, "Being merciful" does not mean only to sympathise with a person in the popular sense of the term. It does not mean simply to feel sorry for someone who is in trouble. It is, the ability to get right inside the other person's skin until we can see things with his eyes, think things with his mind and feel things with his feelings. This is just what God did. He came to the world as a human, He saw things with human eyes, felt things with human's feelings, thought with human's minds and He gave up His very own life to save the mankind.

Dear friends, to us, guilty sinners, God has shown mercy by giving His only Son to die for us. He expressed His willingness to pardon and save us, and He sent His Spirit to renew us and to sanctify us. Each day of our life, each hour and each moment, we partake in His undeserved mercy. All the blessing we enjoy are proofs of His mercy. "If we show mercy to the poor, the wretched and the guilty, it shows that we are like God, we have His Spirit and shall not lose our reward", writes Barnes. So let us be merciful. We have abundant opportunity to be so. Our world is full of poor and needy people. If we are detached and disinterested in those who are suffering, then they will do the same to us. On the other hand if they see that we care, their hearts will respond in caring. And we will also be remembered by our Lord.

PRAYER: Father, when I see the suffering, and the poor, let me not just talk kind words but do all that is possible to relieve their pain. Let me realize that if I treated them with arrogance I would also get the same treatment from others and from you. Let me be merciful. Amen.
